I can't count the number of times I ended an interview early as a young reporter, because I was afraid the sexual harassment would eventually become rape -- only to have male editors reprimand ME for being unprofessional.Katie Sherrodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09159503802660122104noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25082628.post-92167657507351126532011-11-09T20:16:55.647-06:002011-11-09T20:16:55.647-06:00When I pressed charges against my ex-doctoral advi...When I pressed charges against my ex-doctoral advisor, I was fully prepared to sacrifice ever getting a doctorate because I would hence be considered a 'trouble-maker.' I went forward with another grad student; there was an undergrad separately pressing charges (divide and conquer was the university's mindset) but we never were able to find out who she was. We also tried to get the woman we knew he had raped to come forward but she was up for tenure so did not become part of the case because of the grapevine. The university slapped the advisor on the wrist and basically wore us down. I got the doctorate, delayed by two years and will always wonder if they awarded me it just to get rid of me. I will never know.Caminantehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16610142955176992982noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25082628.post-12660110695889412282011-11-09T12:07:29.565-06:002011-11-09T12:07:29.565-06:00Thank you for writing this. You've enunciated what many thinking individuals know about such scenarios.

The other unfortunate fact is that the women who are harrassed, the women who speak up about being harrassed and the women who stand in solidarity with the women who are harrassed and speak up have ever so much more to lose on a long-term, permanent basis than the badly behaved powerful men with powerful friends ever do. The losses are to economic security, family stability and personal self-image and self-confidence.

It's no wonder that smart women do the math and figure out that it often isn't worth engaging the system and choose, instead, to walk away. We must avoid victimizing such women yet again by chastising them for their sensibilities in these instances.

So, instead of throwing barbs at the women who come forward and casting aspersions on their willingness and courage to come forward, we should support the sacrifices that they are surely making to come forward.LELANDA LEEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00007493781222383380noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25082628.post-75231147941836795322011-11-09T10:20:43.797-06:002011-11-09T10:20:43.797-06:00I think the term "bimbo eruptions" was f...I think the term "bimbo eruptions" was first used by Mary Matalin, a Republican strategist.
